Hometown: Montreal, QC

Music Genre: Folk Jazz

Year it all began: 2013

A quick introduction: Drawing inspirations from many styles stemming from folk, jazz and classical, Montreal native and singer songwriter Thanya Iyer and her band create beautiful soundscapes which resonate throughout the city of Montreal. The music is filled with rich string textures, deep dark bass lines and a soulful voice floating on top.

What got you into music? I’ve always played music as a child, started out with piano and then pursued violin, Indian classical, bluegrass and western classical, loved to sing jazz standards as well. I did musical theatre in highschool, and then in College I decided to apply for a double major and that’s where I met Alex who plays Upright Bass and formed my first bands with all the friends I met at music school

What are your sources of inspiration? Life has so many hardships – we all experience change, love and loss. I find it easiest to write songs and melodies after being in immense states of confusion…oh the trials of being 23

Dream gig? David Letterman? No wait.. Conan? Also Ellen! + Dancing with Ellen
