The 11th Annual ACTRA Awards took place on February 23, 2013, at The Carlu in downtown Toronto. First presented in 1972, the awards celebrate excellence in Canada’s television, film and radio industry. At the gala event, three juried awards were presented for Outstanding Female Performance, Outstanding Male Performance and Outstanding Voice Performance.
Shirley Douglas was presented with ACTRA Toronto’s 2013 Award of Excellence, an award that recognizes an individuals exceptional body of work and commitment to advocacy on behalf of all performers. Heather Allin, President of ACTRA Toronto mentioned Ms. Douglas as a “powerful and persuasive advocate for all performers. She led the charge in ACTRA’s fight for protection of children working in [the entertainment] industry. Her fierce advocacy is effective and inspiring.” The award was presented by last year’s recipient, Rick Mercer. Ms. Douglas was accompanied to the ACTRA Awards by her children Kiefer and Rachel Sutherland.
Tatiana Maslany took home the prize for Outstanding Female Performance for her performance in Kate Miles Melville’s Picture Day as Claire. Others up for the award included Vivien Endicott-Douglas (The Shape of Rex), Kiara Glasco (Copper), Naomi Snieckus (Mr. D) and Meg Tilly (Bomb Girls). Nominees for Outstanding Male Performance included Jonas Chernick (My Awkward Sexual Adventure), Enrico Colantoni (Flashpoint), Luke Kirby (The Samaritan) and Rossif Sutherland (Flashpoint), with the award going to Shawn Doyle for his performance as Pete in Shandi Mitchell’s The Disappeared. Lastly, the award for Outstanding Voice Performance went too Shannon Kook-Chun for his performance as Yun in Jon Ng’s short 2012 video, Requiem for Romance. Others that were up for the award included Emilie-Claire Barlow (Almost Naked Animals), Pat Kelly (This is That), Julie Lemieux (Almost Naked Animals) and Jordan Pettle (Afghanada).
