The one thing you can definitely appreciate about the 10 days of TIFF are the many events that really put a spotlight on women. The 4th Annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film celebratory gala took place this year at the Shangri-La Hotel, honouring outstanding Canadian women for their contributions to film and TV.
This year’s honourees included: actresses Catherine O’Hara (Schitt’s Creek), Karine Vanasse (The Forbidden Room), Katie Boland (Born To Be Blue), and Suzanne Clément (Guibord S’en va-t-en Guerre/My Internship in Canada); and directors Anne Émond (Les Êtres Chers/Our Loved Ones), Ingrid Veninger (The Animal Project), Kari Skogland (Fear The Walking Dead), Patricia Rozema (Into The Forest), and Sophie Deraspe (A Gay Girl in Damascus: The Amina Profile).
The event was attended by Canada’s tight-knit film and television community of actors, actresses, directors and more. Past recipients such as Deepa Mehta were in attendance as well.
