During the recent TIFF 2014 announcements, an opening night film was not announced as part of the line-up. Today, the TIFF programmers have stated that the previously announced The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, will open the 39th annual film festival on its iconic Thursday gala on September 4.
The Judge follows big city lawyer Hank Palmer (Downey Jr.) as he returns to his childhood home where his estranged father (Duvall), the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth, and along the way reconnects with the family he walked away from years before. In addition to Downey Jr. and Duvall, the film stars Vera Farmiga, Vincent D’Onofrio, Jeremy Strong, Dax Shepard and Billy Bob Thornton.
