Our first-time intro to any music artist begins with our Artist Profile, where we learn about them and their music, directly from them.
Name: Jeremy Loops
CMW Show(s):
Hometown: Cape Town, South Africa
Music Genre: Modern Folk
Year it all began: 2011 professionally. 2008 casually
A quick introduction: From Sunny Cape Town, and my music is a hybrid of folk, hip hop, Balkan music, house, and a touch of rock. We call it modern folk for short. Got the #1 album on iTunes South Africa, and it’s scheduled for a North American release at the end of August. Be nice to me and my team, Canada!
What got you into music? Hated my finance and property degree at University, and so I picked up guitar as a form of procrastination. I’ve always loved art, though, so it was either music or a photography career. Looks like music stuck. I might yet become a photographer later in my life.
What are your sources of inspiration? Family, friends, the sea, and human experiences.
Dream gig? So many. There’s a venue in Cape Town called Kirstenbosch. Seats 6000 people. We’ve played and sold it out twice. That was a dream. Obviously Coachella and Glastonbury are targets, as is MSG. We dream big.
Your thoughts on Canadian Music Week? The lineup of speakers AND artists is fantastic. This is our first time, but we’re very excited. First time in Canada, too, so that is very exciting. Showcases like this are so important for young bands who don’t live in music hubs like North America and Europe, so we’re really excited.
Interesting points others don’t know about you? I have a pet goat named Fernando. He’s awesome. No, seriously.
