The Arts Scene attended the second Canadian Screen Awards 2013 Industry Gala on Thursday, February 28th, celebrating achievement in television programming.
The star-studded gala event took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, attended by the who’s who of Toronto’s film and television industry. The event presented awards to individuals in various categories, including Drama, Children’s or Youth, Comedy and Variety. Flashpoint took away four Canadian Screen Awards during the evening; Best Direction in Dramatic Series (Jim Donovan), Best Writing in Dramatic Series (Aubrey Nealon), Best Original Music Score for a Series (Amin Bhatia & Ari Posner) and Best Picture Editing in a Dramatic Program (Brett C. Sullivan). A tribute to Flashpoint was also done by the Academy Board of Directors’.
Degrassi took home two Canadian Screen Awards as well; one for Best Children’s or Youth Fiction Program and one for Best Direction in a Children’s or Youth Program (Phil Earnshaw). On that same note, Degrassi’s Melinda Shankar also nabbed a Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance in a Children’s or Youth Program in her role in How to be Indie 2.
Another big winner that evening was the Rick Mercer Report, which took away three Canadian Screen Awards: Best Music, Variety, Sketch Comedy or Talk Program, Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program and Best Performance in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program. On the comedy front, Call Me Fitz took away four awards, including Best Direction (Sheri Elwood), Best Photography (Ian Bibby), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role (Stuart Margolin) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role (Joanna Cassidy).
Sex & the City’sKim Cattrall was also honoured with the Canadian Screen Award For Outstanding Artistic Contribution to Film & Television.
