A quick introduction: Hello. My name is Ryan and I write the songs for The Ugly Club. I listen to mostly Prince and Bjork but for some reason our music sounds the way it does.
What attracted you to music? I came up thinking music was the most important thing in life and once I grew up to be a rational, responsible adult, I realized it was true all along. Also, Michael Jackson videos and Motown compilations of Beta tape played a big role.
What are your sources of inspiration? Currently, my major inspiration is to impress the extremely smart and talented people in my band and write songs that move them as well as the people that already love our music. It’s a heavy weight to carry, but I’ve been working out.
What would your dream gig be? An absolute dream would I guess be to headline and sell out a major arena like MSG or something. I think that’s every musicians’ dream though. I’d be very happy playing slots on Bonnaroo or Coachella now.
What are your thoughts about the NXNE platform? I think NXNE remains one of the true indie music discovery platforms as a festival. As much as we’ve loved taking part in CMJ, SXSW and some others, NXNE actually selects artists in an honest fashion as opposed to the more political aforementioned fests.
Interesting points others don’t know about you? I have a zero tolerance policy for bad music. Turn that shit off.
