A film that’s on everyone’s mind is Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. The upcoming Disney film is a black-and-white, stop motion-animated comedy-horror. A bit of a mouthful but a very exciting project. For those who do not know what a stop-motion animated film is: it is a technique in film that utilizes the physical manipulation of an object to create film. These movements are done is small increments between frames, creating the illusion of motion. Its a very difficult and time consuming process. This film, as mentioned earlier, is directed by legendary director Tim Burton and features a stellar cast including Catherine O’Hara, Winona Ryder, Martin Landau and Martin Short. The story follows Young Victor who decides to do a little science experiment to bring back his dog Sparky; from the dead. His plan, alas, goes off into various, unintended tangents. This project is a remake of a 1984 short-film by the same name.
Stop-motion films are rare and a chance to see the process of how they are made is not something you get to see very often. Fan Expo 2012 has had the greatest opportunity to host the Frankenweenie Exhibition which showcases the art models and process that Tim Burton used to bring his beloved characters to life on the big screen. The exhibition showcases the kind of work space Tim Burton had and the various models and props he used in the development of the film.
In our highlights, we mentioned the exhibition as a top must-see event and on the first day of the Expo, we got a special sneak-preview before the crowds. Below is a collection of photos from the exhibition, as well as the films trailer. On scene was Greg Mason, VP of Marketing for Walt Disney Studios Canada, who kindly provided more insight into the various items on exhibit and more about the film.
We’ve got one simple thing to tell you: GO SEE IT!
