TIFF 2014: Top Five Films of the Festival

This year at the Toronto International Film Festival, I was fortunate enough to view a grand total of thirty-one films. Some I raved about endlessly, and encouraged everybody I met over the Festival – including strangers in rush lines – to check out. Others, I didn’t have as many positive things about which to say, but fortunately the disappointments made up a small minority. Here I take the opportunity to discuss my five favourite films of TIFF 2014, although narrowing it down proved to be quite the challenge!

#5: The Imitation Game

It came as no surprise to me that The Imitation Game was awarded the coveted People’s Choice award this year. This film is a crowd pleaser, but it is also very well done, turning a potentially dry biographical story into an exciting and suspenseful war drama. All of the acting performances are strong, but Benedict Cumberbatch stands out in the lead role, rendering his brilliant character fascinating and sympathetic against all odds. The Imitation Game has wide mainstream appeal, and tells an important story that deserves this attention.
