Family Channel puts the step to the music with their new, highly anticipated original series The Next Step. The show follows an elite group of young dancers striving to out shine the competition and make a name for themselves. The Arts Scene sat down with Alexandra Beaton and Brittany Raymond to chat about the show, their characters, their involvement with dance and what they have to say to their peers and colleagues who want to move into the world of dance.
Alexandra Beaton plays Emily on the show, a contemporary dancer and the captain of the The Next Step Studio, as well as the leader of the E-Girls. Beaton brings with her a ton of experience from both the dance and acting floor. This award-winning competitive dancer has performed as Baby June at the Shaw Festival’s Gypsy and carries film credits such as 300 and Four Sisters.
Brittany Raymond has been dancing since the age of six. She plays Riley on the show; Emily’s younger sister and the sensible one in the group. Raymond has a RAD Advanced 1 certification and training in multiple different dance styles, including ballet, jazz, and modern. She puts her knowledge and skills into practice with her co-teaching role at the Joanne Champman’s School of Dance, where she is a member of the Advanced Company Team. Raymond has worked with notable choreographers including Mandy Moore and Stacey Tookey.
The Next Step premieres Friday, March 8 at 7 pm ET/PT. Make sure to visit Family.ca for all the information on the show and to learn more about the characters. Stay tuned for our interview with Trevor Tordjman and Isaac Lupien, who play James and Eldon on the show!
