#3: Whiplash
Two of my favourite performances of TIFF 2014 are to be found in Whiplash. Relative newcomer Miles Teller and screen veteran J.K. Simmons go head-to-head in this crackling tale of musical passion, as a fiery young student stands up to his brilliant yet vicious teacher. The film features an incredible jazz score, and is shot in a hectic manner that represents the style of this music and helps a viewer to truly understand it. Sharp and funny yet brutally intense, this film takes one on a wild musical ride and leaves them breathless by its grand conclusion.
