The 2014 Canadian Screen Awards will probably be one of the most talked about events this year, raising the bar and truly highlighting Canadian talent and productions. The much anticipated Broadcast Gala took place on Sunday, March 9, at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, bringing together the who’s who of the industry.
The evening was undoubtedly a night for television. After clearing out the Industry Gala’s with eight awards, Orphan Black took home another two during the evening: Best Actress in a Drama (Tatiana Maslany) and Best Dramatic Series. Jason Priestley’s Call Me Fitz pulled a hat trick by taking away all three awards for comedy: Best Actor (Jason Priestley), Best Actress (Tracy Dawson), and Best Comedy. CBC production JACK took away awards for lead performances by Rick Roberts and Sook-Yin Lee, for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Dramatic Program respectively. Hugh Dillon won the award for Best Actor in a TV drama for hit Toronto-filmed television show Flashpoint.
In the film category, Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy took away five awards: Best Supporting Actress (Sarah Gadon), Best Direction (Denis Villeneuve), Cinematography (Nicolas Bolduc), Editing (Matthew Hannam), and Music – Original Score (Danny Bensi, Saunder Jurriaans). Toronto-filmed The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones took home awards for Sound Editing, Overall Sound, Visual Effects and Make-Up. Don Carmody won the Cineplex Golden Reel Award for the film as well.
The big award for Best Motion Picture went to Gabrielle, with Best Actress in a Leading Role going to Gabrielle Marion-Rivard.
