On Sunday, March 3rd, The Academy presented awards to 37 winners in film and television programming categories at the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards Broadcast Gala. The event was hosted by the energetic and hilarious Martin Short and was held at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto.
Flashpoint and Less Than Kind led the Television and Digital Media category with two Canadian Screen Awards each. Flashpoint nabbed the Best Dramatic Series Award, while Enrico Colantoni won for Best Actor in a Dramatic Role. Less Than kind won the Bell Media Award for Best Comedy Program or Series while the shows Wendel Meldrum took home the Best Actress in a Comedy award. Bomb Girls’ Meg Tilly took home the award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Role while Gerry Dee took home the Best Actor in a Comedy. George Stroumboulopoulos – host of CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight – won the Shaw Award for Best Host, while Peter Mansbridge took away the title of Best New Anchor.
The film category at the Canadian Screen Awards was dominated by one film: Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle/War Witch. The film won 10 awards, including Best Motion Picture, Achievement in Direction (Kim Nguyen), Best Supporting Actor (Serge Kanyinda), Best Actress (Rachel Mwanza), Original Screenplay, Achievement in Editing, Cinematography, Art Direction, Overall Sound and Sound Editing.
James Cromwell won Best Actor for Still Mine. Midnight’s Children won two awards: Seema Biswas for Best Supporting Actress and Salman Rushdie for Adapted Screenplay. Sarah Polley and Anita Lee took home the Ted Rogers Best Feature Length Documentary award for Stories We Tell.
The evening was filled with buzz and excitement as the who’s who of the industry arrived at the Sony Centre for a celebrating of film and television.
