Canadian Screen Awards 2013: Interview with Don Carmody

 

The Arts Scene catches up with Producer Don Carmody after he was presented with the 2012 Cineplex Golden Reel Award for action thriller Resident Evil: Retribution at the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards.

Don Carmody has been a producer of many films over the years, prominently working on the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises. He produced the hockey film GOON – which also received numerous nominations at the Canadian Screen Awards – and is a producer on The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, an upcoming film starring Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower. Other films he shall be producing, that are currently in-development, include Chris Brinker’s Whiskey Bay and Lowell Dean’s 13 Eerie. He will re-team with Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson to produce Pompeii and co-produce Resident Evil 6, pending further discussions.

The Cineplex Golden Reel Award is presented to the Canadian film that earns the highest domestic box office in that year. This year’s award at the Canadian Screen Awards marks the seventh time Carmody has won the award as producer, with his previous awards for Meatballs (1980), Porkys (1983), Johnny Mnemonic (1996), The Art of Warin (2000), Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) and Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010).

Resident Evil: Retribution grossed over $5.4 million in Canada in 2012, surpassing previous films in the franchise. The film grossed $250 million worldwide while the franchise has grossed over $930 million at the global box office. The film is now available on DVD and VOD.
