I love how TIFF is slowly dripping its full lineup of programming, and today was really exciting news.
Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Woman King, one of my most anticipated films to watch this year, will get its World Premiere at the 47th edition of the festival.
The film tells the story of the Agoji, an all-female warrior unit who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800’s. At the centre of this film is General Nanisca, played my the ever-so-powerful Viola Davis, as she trains the next generation of warriors and readies them for a battle with a foe that is hell bent on changing their way of life.
Davis is probably one of my all time favourite artists. If you’ve watch How to Get Away With Murder or any of her award-winning films, you know just how powerful of a performer Davis is. Her range, her ability to deliver powerful dialogue, and her presence make her absolutely perfect for a role like Nanisca.
Prince-Bythewood (The Secret Life of Bees) didn’t just stop with Davis as far as casting is concerned. The film features some of the most refined talent of our day, including Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin and John Boyega.
I am also excited for the fact that Maria Bello is in the writers room with Dana Stevens (Fatherhood).
Watch the trailer below; you’ll understand the hype and excitement around this production. Im so very glad that TIFF, known for its uncanny ability to select great films, is featuring this production in September.
In addition to The Woman King, TIFF also previously announced Nicholas Stoller’s Bros, Sanaa Lathan’s On the Come Up, Clement Virgo’s Brother and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This is shaping up to be a powerhouse 47th festival, and the line-up so far is a dream. We cannot wait to see what other films are in store for what is one of the most important film festivals in North America.
