Drums have been around for a long time and have been an important part of many different cultures; Asian cultures especially. The Japanese are well known for their drumming art. The larger drums, called Taiko, have been used in everything from folk traditions to warfare. It is definitely an important part of their culture.
Now this magnificient art has been brought to Toronto by the TAO musical troupe. Formed in 1993, the troupe brings to the stage a mix of dance and music to reflect on Japanese tradition. Their performances consist of traditional Japanese songs but the majority are modern compositions by the troupe. After touring Japan for nearly 10 years, they ventured into the international market and became an instant success. Their trip to Toronto is part of their first North American Tour, which concluded on March 31st 2012 in Rochester, New York.

The TAO troupe brings an elegant presentation of Japanese culture to the Sony Centre stage. When you enter the theatre, you are presented with this beautiful backdrop, which reflects on the many natural elements of Japan. When the show begins, the gentle but soul-moving sound of the Fue’s – Japanese flutes – engulf the theatre. The drums are of course an essential part of the whole experience. Utilizing many different forms of the taiko drum, the diversity of the drum music is just beautiful. With that said, to highlight Japanese musical tradition, the production uses many different instruments to complement the drums. In addition to the Fue, the production uses instruments like the Koto – a long zither – as well as the very elegant shamisen. The combination of these various instruments created a truly magical musical experience.
There are moments when the troupe must transition between performances and the process involves the movement of heavy instruments across the stage. During the transition phase the troupe brilliantly presented short segements where they interacted with the audience, adding a bit of humour to the evening. These short moments really got the audience excited and involved, creating a valuable connection with the troupe that made the overall experience fantastic.

TAO truly brings forward a show that clearly showcases an aspect of Japanese tradition. The amazing part of the whole show was the diversity of talent. Both men & women performed with similar instruments. One of the female performers, Arisa Nishi, plays one of the big drums so well that you are emotionally touched by her performance. Each member brings energy and spirit to their performances. They not only play each instrument but deliver a live performance as well. To do both with perfection, live on stage, is an out-of-this-world experience. Absolutely brilliant!
