Cottage country is a chance to unwind and kick back, and let the world just slow down a little bit.
This summer, we had the chance to visit beautiful Callander Bay, Ontario. Located just a stone’s throw away from North Bay, and about 340’ish kilometers from downtown Toronto, Callander Bay features an exquisite body of water for fishing and water sports, serene sandy beaches and a quiet, local environment.
During our trip, we stayed at a beautiful Airbnb cottage retreat that provided the foundation (and backdrop) for everything we experienced, something I’ll discuss in the various sections below.
Serene waters
There is nothing more calming than sitting on a dock, dipping your toes into cool, serene waters.
Callander Bay is an incredible body of water, a part of Lake Nipissing, that is perfect for fishing and canoeing.
Our property was situated near Windsor Creek, right on the water. We were lucky to have access to a dock right on the property, giving us an opportunity to fish and enjoy the water while still in our PJ’s. We had a clear view of Henrietta Island, the larger bay, and the morning sunrise.
Just a short walk away from our property was the historic Southeast Bay Lighthouse (see above). Built in 1887, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in the area. Access to this lighthouse was confusing as the map says its on the other side of private property. However, a very kind local resident gave our group permission to walk through his property to see the lighthouse and the beautiful beach it was situated on (see below). Canadian kindness at its best. We probably spent a few minutes just starring into the lake and its crystal waters.
The township, located about 15 minutes away from the property, is a great place to stock up on grocery’s from the local Foodland or get a boat rental for further adventuring in the bay. With that said, it also features some wonderful beaches and play areas right by the water. I think wherever you are at, you’ll get splendid views and access to the serene water of Callander Bay.
Under the stars
Callander Bay is one of the areas in Ontario’s cottage country that features low light pollution, allowing you to enjoy the stars in all their glory.
We had the pleasure of enjoying this experience from the convenience of our cottage’s scenic deck. The sky was clear and the insects at a minimum. After switching off the property’s lights for the evening, we immersed ourselves in a bit of astrophotography on our cellphones. The results, as you can see below, are beyond magical.
Whether you just want to lie down under the stars or partake in a bit of astrophotography, this property and the other properties in the area will be a great choice.
I wouldn’t necessarily recommend booking an Airbnb specifically for astrophotography, however, unless you are on an extended trip. With close proximity to the lake and the topsy turvy weather during the summer months, finding the right conditions for a professional astrophotography run during a short stay can be challenging. We were there for a short 4 days, and we got lucky. Shortly after our shoot, the clouds rolled in (something you can see in our photo). For something like that, I would suggest going to places like Torrance Barrens or the Kawartha Lakes, something you can possibly make a day trip out of.
Nature trails
Cottage country is nature upon nature, and there is no limit to it.
However, staying in and around Callander Bay means you are still close to specific and exciting nature attractions. One of the treks we embarked on was a trip to Duchesnay Falls, a waterfall and trail located just north-west of North Bay. It was a 28 kilometers journey from our cottage; about a half hour drive.
Just off of Highway 17, you get access to a scenic set of trails that provide gorgeous views of the waterfall as it flows down the escarpment. While there were points that were tricky to climb, the experience was surreal. We got to see some wildlife as well, including many species of birds and of course, adorable red squirrels.
This was a perfect hiking and trekking adventure to have as a group, and doesn’t cost anything.
The cottage experience
You’ve probably heard a lot about the cottage we’ve stayed at so far, but lets address it directly: our cottage was a wonderful place to stay.
Lisa, our host, has put together a space that gives you everything you will ever need to enjoy the cottage countryside. From a fully equipped kitchen, to BBQ facilities, WIFI and boardgames, you got all the creature comforts you needed to make your stay smooth and enjoyable. The property was very well maintained, with recent upgrades that you don’t often see in a cottage. With four rooms and ample of parking, you have ample of space to go as a large family or friends group, allowing you to enjoy both the bay and the township with great company. The only caveat was that the property featured one bathroom, which can be a challenge when you have 6-8 people.
Callander Bay is far from Toronto, but rentals like this one make the trek out worthwhile. Thank you Lisa for sharing your space. It has helped create memories that will last a lifetime. Be sure to check out her Airbnb for your next visit.
I’ve had the privilege of travelling to many places around the world and experiencing the hospitality that they have to offer. However, we often overlook the beauty and hospitality in our own backyard. Callander Bay was a surreal experience, and I am really looking forward to going back. I would highly recommend you add it to your next weekend getaway list.
