Meesha Shafi shares the philosophy behind her music

Rhythms of Canada Festival 2022

Meesha Shafi is a powerhouse Pakistani-Canadian singer and songwriter who has mesmerized audiences globally with her electrifying music.

Now we got the opportunity to sit down for an intimate conversation about the philosophy behind her music, what drives the kind of songs she creates, and how it feels to be back on stage in front of a live audience after so long.

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Shafi is a jill of all trades having dabbled in music, modeling and acting. She started her music journey with her husband Mahmood Rahman and his band Overload before leaving in 2011. Her performances on Coke Studio have brought her critical acclaim over the years, which has also served as an outlet for international audiences to engage with her and her music.

Shafi is fluid when it comes to the development of her music. As she mentions in our interview, she doesn’t stick to one particular style or delivery, while also experimenting with lyrics and composition. As such, each one of her songs is vastly different and unique. From Sufi folk to rap, her ability to play with different styles means she is able to create a unique portfolio to engage audiences with.

Rhythms of Canada Festival served as the perfect venue for Shafi to showcase her music. The festival brought together multi-cultural communities together, showcasing what Canada has to offer across many artistic mediums. As you will hear from our upcoming interview with Aga Khan Museums’s Head of Performing Arts Amirali Alibhai, the festival acts as a foundation to celebrate what Canada has to offer locally, even while those very performers have international links. Shafi shares a similar sentiment when she compares both her homes of Lahore and Toronto as she discusses the festival.

Hope you enjoy watching the conversation above.
