The Arts Scene sat down for a chat with director Jenée LaMarque and actress Zoe Kazan about their new film, The Pretty One.
The Pretty One follows the story of identical twin sisters: Audrey & Laurel (Zoe Kazan). They maybe identical in looks but complete opposites when it comes to their character. Audrey is the confident, stylish and independent of two, qualities Laurel really desires. Laurel, on the other hand, is sweet but a tad awkward, lives at home and is obsessed with the boy next door. A reunion of the two sisters turns into tragedy and a momentary confusion provides Laurel the opportunity to reinvent her life, as her sister. The Pretty One is a film that dabbles in multiple emotions and is an in-depth study of character.
This is Jenée LaMarque’s first feature film, having previously dabbled in various short films including 2012’s Spoonful and 2007’s Happy Deathday. She brings to the screen a TFF-winner, Zoe Kazan, who is no stranger to audiences everywhere. After her feature film debut in 2003 in Max Borenstein’s Swordswallowers and Thin Men. Since then, she has established a presence both on screen and on stage with many notable performances. She was last seen in Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ Ruby Sparks, as the lead character of the same name.
