Sean Astin attended the 2013 Toronto ComiCon as part of the Sci-Fi guest line up. The Arts Scene got an opportunity to chat with him towards the end of Day 2, to talk about his visit to Toronto, possibility of a comic book character down the road and his advice to aspiring artists.
Born in Santa Monica, California, Sean Astin is best known for his role as Samwise “Sam” Gamgee in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Astin received numerous nominations for his performance in The Return of the King, taking home the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor and awards from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society, the Seattle Film Critics, the Utah Film Critics Association, and the Phoenix Film Critics Society.
Other notable roles include him as Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, a role that won him the Best Starring Performance By a Young Actor in a Motion Picture at the 7th Youth in Film Awards (now known as Young Artist Awards). Sean Astin voiced Raphael in 2012’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV Series.
He will be seen in a number of upcoming productions: Luke Moran’s The Boys of Abu Ghraib, with Sarah Paxton and Michael Welch; Chuck Powers’ Ribbit, with Tim Curry and Russell Peters; and Rod Lurie’s TV movie The Surgeon General, with Jason Isaacs, Kathryn Morris and Mike Colter.
