Get ready to laugh your pants off because heading to theatres on June 29th is Universal’s new comedy film, Ted. The film is written, directed and produced by the creative genius that is Seth MacFarlane, the same guy who brought us the hit TV show Family Guy.
The story follows John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a simple, ordinary Boston local who has a rather extraordinary friend named Ted, who just happens to be a living, breathing, teddy bear. Left out as a kid, a young John Bennett wishes for his teddy bear to come to life and guess what? His wish comes true. John & Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) grow up together and remain friends well into their adult years. Problems begin to arise when Ted & his negative influence puts John’s relationship with his one true love, Lori (Mila Kunis), in jeopardy. John is put in rather an awkward situation: the girl or the bear.

The movie barely starts and the very familiar comedy of Seth MacFarlane fills the theatre’s atmosphere. MacFarlane has taken a very interesting approach to the development of this film. Not only is he the creative brain behind the film, but he also stars as the main character, Ted. This is brilliant because he is able to weave together the entire film and keep the various elements, primarily comedy, consistent throughout the film. MacFarlane does a brilliant job voicing Ted, bringing to the screen a truly unique animated character. You perceive Ted as cute and cuddly in the beginning, until he opens his mouth. MacFarlane has created absolutely brilliant dialogue. Not only does it flow, but it just captivates you throughout the film. You can’t find a moment to feel bored. Its lively, entertaining and keeps you on your toes. He blends in mature subject matter to create this twisted character that just makes you laugh throughout the film.

Sticking to characters, Wahlberg and Kunis give refreshing performances as John and Lori respectively. Wahlberg leaves his common tough-guy persona we have become use to for an emotional, down-to-earth character that you just love to watch on screen. He does a nice job showcasing his character’s relationship with Ted, especially considering its an animated character. Kunis by the same token does a brilliant job of portraying John’s love interest, building a character thats neither in your face or over the top. All the actors in this film demonstrate lovely on-screen chemistry, which just enhances the comedy to a whole new level.
MacFarlane and crew have done a fantastic job in creating something unique and fun. Mixing together creative dialogue, fun acting and an interesting story, Ted is a fantastic fun-time at the movies and is one of the best comedy films of the year so far.
Ted opens across Canada on Friday, June 29th 2012.
