Animated films have been around for a very long time, enjoyed by kids and adults around the world. It all began in 1937 when Disney released the first ever sound & colour animated feature film: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Since then, animated films have become a part of growing up, an experience that truly is magical in every way. Dominating the animated-film realm is Pixar Animation Studios, currently owned by The Walt Disney Company, which brought us 1995’s Toy Story. Now the creative guru’s within Pixar bring us their 13th production: Brave.
Based on a story by Brenda Chapman and directed by Mark Andrews, Brave follows the tale of young Princess Merida; a curious & cheerful girl – and the only-daughter of Scottish royalty – who aspires to be an archer when she grows up. In the heat of a moment, Merida makes a reckless decision that puts her family in danger. Understanding that she must undo the mistake she has made, Merida sets about to make things right, taking her on a journey that teaches her the value of family, love, and the importance of being brave. The film features a stellar cast including Kelly Macdonald (Merida), Emma Thompson (Queen Elinor), Billy Connolly (King Fergus), Julie Walters (The Witch) and Robbie Coltrane (Lord Dingwall), among many others.
Pixar, to simply put it, have produced a masterpiece. You walk in expecting a lot, knowing the kind of films Pixar has produced, and your expectations are simply exceeded. What Andrews and his team have done is produce something that is both visually and emotionally fantastic. The story is simple and easy to follow. It captures you from the very first scene and it keeps you captivated till the very end. It contains a brilliant mix of emotions – especially humour – all of which keep the audience engaged throughout. There isn’t one moment in the entire movie that is either dull or boring. In addition to the story, the film’s score by Patrick Doyle & Co. is simply beautiful. Using native Scottish instruments, Doyle has been able to capture that contemporary feel of the region the story is based in, enhancing the overall film experience.
The highlight of film, of course, is its lead character: Princess Merida. She is Pixar’s first female lead and what a character they have created. In the midst of all the cheerful & happy characteristics, we able to find a female character dig deep, demonstrate mature emotions and showcase strength. This is something we have not seen in a female character within any animated film and to see it in Brave, it’s truly a refreshing experience. The team has spent time defining who she is and what she is capable of and then executed those definitions in a way that doesn’t look over the top or “typical”. You see this sophistication in character development in all the various characters in the film but more so in Merida which really does add to the whole experience.
One thing that cannot be overlooked is the visual detail of the production. For the first time in 25 years, Pixar re-wrote their animation system to account for complex visuals and this you can really see on screen. The way this movie has been made is beyond beautiful. The visuals are absolutely stunning. It really is magic to the eyes. For the whole 100 minutes, you are treated with graphics and animation that simply wow’s you from beginning to end. Pixar has put in the effort to make something you seriously will never forget. In addition, the 3D for Brave actually works. Other films, animation included, use 3D as a selling point and apply it to their production rather randomly. The 3D in this production actually adds value to the whole experience and makes the beautiful animation work stand out. Its beauty beyond explanation.
Brave is an absolute masterpiece that delivers a heart-warming story, captivating characters and stunning visuals. The creative masters have, yet again, created something that puts a smile on a child’s face and leaves you feeling great. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch this amazing film in theaters!
