It’s quite an interesting experience when your tripod is shorter than the subject of your interview! Saturday night brought many great moments when The Arts Scene sat down to have a chat with Canada’s award-winning – and tall! – fiddling sensation, Karrnnel Sawitsky.
From Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Sawitsky began playing the fiddle at the tender age of four, being immersed into music thanks to his musical family. He has spent the last 26 years deeply immersed in the art, performing with his band The Fretless, doing many solo gigs, releasing multiple albums, and touring as much as possible. His music captures the essence of folk music, taking inspiration from many styles including Celtic, Jazz, Irish, Scottish, French Canadian and much more.
The Fretless have been recognized by folks all across Canada, recently winning the the Instrumental Album of the Year at the 2012 Western Canadian Music Awards. As a solo act, Sawitsky has created a name for himself. He has been nominated for countless awards including the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year. He recently won People’s Choice for Instrumental Recording of the Year at the 2012 Independent Music Awards and is also the recipient of the 30 Below Award, given at the 2012 Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Arts Awards.
In 2013, he makes the big move to Toronto. His latest single, 101, is a precursor to his upcoming solo album which will be released in the new year. Karrnnel Sawitsky is a powerhouse when it comes to music and a name we are going to see more often come the new year.
After our little chit chat, Sawitsky was joined by good friend Jake Charron for an exciting live performance that got everyone at the gallery tapping and dancing. Watch our interview with Karrnnel Sawitsky and the special live-performance he & Charron kindly provided.
We would like to thank the Bezpala Brown Gallery for kindly providing us with a space to conduct this interview.
