If you read our review of Raising Hell – a new book by Toronto-based film critic Richard Crouse – you will understand how excited we were for the official book launch! The launch – put together thanks to ECW Press and TINARS – took place within the intimate environment of No One Writes to the Colonel, a bar located in Toronto’s Little Italy. Buzzing full of excitement, the bar was packed with people, each individual holding a copy of Crouse’s latest adventure in film.
“Adventure” is likely the best word for this latest book. It puts a spotlight on The Devils; a 1971 film, directed by renowned film-maker Ken Russell, masked with controversy and censorship. For 40 years it was censored from the public eye, until 2010, when the film was screened at the Bloor Cinema where Crouse had the brilliant opportunity to have a conversation with Ken Russell himself. This book takes Russell’s “Masterpiece” and breaks it down. From the inspiration behind it to the final product, this book tracks the entire journey the film took to be made. The book couples a beautiful story with brilliant facts, taken from close sources of the project. Its a magical piece of film analysis.
The launch brought out those who appreciated great film, as well as those who appreciated others who take the time to study and share about film. Crouse truly understands how to converse about film, with his latest book being a perfect example.
