Our TIFF coverage would be incomplete without a conversation with the festival’s Artistic Director Cameron Bailey. In his current role for 6 year’s now, Bailey has been one of the most influential catalysts behind the ever evolving Toronto International Film Festival.
Born in Barbados, Bailey took a rather challenging path growing up, overcoming many obstacles before joining the University of Western Ontario, studying English to pursue his dream career in journalism. At UWO, Bailey developed an interest in film and culture, propelling him towards a graduate education in understanding culture, focusing on cinema and social political thought. Bailey chose not to finish his graduate education and continued his work as a film writer. Film criticism became a central focus, establishing himself as a renowned voice with outlets such as Now Magazine.
Bailey’s beginnings with TIFF started in 1990, when he was approached by Piers Handling a second time to join the festival team, after Bailey refused the first offer in 1989. He began first as a film programmer, slowly evolving his position at TIFF to his current role as Artistic Director.
Cameron Bailey is one of the most eloquent and refined individuals you will run into. His passion for film can be seen in our conversation, something he brings to the table when putting together one of the largest and most influential film festivals in the world.
